When you're outdoors without trees and shade, the easiest and cheapest solution is to buy a patio umbrella. Unfortunately, buying an umbrella for your patio isn't easy unless you know the specific details that are best for your yard. There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing an umbrella that fits your situation and lifestyle.

7 Guidelines To Choosing A Great Patio Umbrella

1. Location.

When choosing the right umbrella for your backyard, you should consider where you want to place it so that it serves your shading purpose.

The position of the parasol on the terrace is important. There are two categories of parasol positions: over table and standalone. Freestanding umbrellas are used in large open spaces. You can refer to different types of garden furniture in any size and shape you want. A table-top parasol is often placed in the center of a patio table to be used as a focal point outdoors.

2. Umbrella stand

It is the support of your patio umbrella. The stand or base depends on how you use it. When choosing a standard base for your outdoor umbrella, you should consider a sturdy support base that can withstand any weather. Freestanding umbrellas require a heavier base than transparent table umbrellas.

3. Size

The size of an umbrella is determined by measuring its diameter. When choosing the correct size for your patio umbrella, be sure to measure your table, chairs, or area to be shaded. A rule of thumb when calculating diameter is that umbrellas should always be at least 4-5 feet larger than the intended coverage area.

4. Umbrella frame

You can choose from two types of frames: metal and wood. Your choice of frame will depend on how you plan to use your parasol and what fits your patio theme. Metal umbrellas tilt with a button or crank. This allows you to tilt the umbrella in any direction. Most metal umbrellas are available in color finishes such as black, champagne, or white. Wooden umbrellas can usually be opened by hand using a pulley and cannot be rotated. Hardwood and teak are the most common wooden umbrellas in stores.

5. Tilt method

There are three ways to tilt the umbrella: tilt the collar, tilt the handle, and push the button. The tilt collar method is the most common and convenient to use. When the collar on the frame rotates, the umbrella tilts.

6. Materials

The primary purpose of a patio umbrella is to block dangerous sun rays. This goal will be successful depending on the material of the canopy. The most common materials are PVC, canvas, and curtain fabric. The PVC canopy provides 100% UV protection and can withstand adverse weather conditions. Canvas awnings are durable fabrics that provide effective sun protection. It is not waterproof when purchased, but the dome can be waterproofed. Shading fabric blocks 90-95% of UV rays. It can withstand some rain, but it is not completely waterproof.

7. Views

  - central pillar

The center bar is the most common type of patio umbrella. It is supported by a central pillar. The ribs of the umbrella diverge from the poles. Umbrellas with central support are recommended to be placed on a sturdy, heavy base.

 - roll and tilt

The crank and tilt design is very similar to the center post, but it is known that there is a crank mechanism between the post and the canopy that allows the angle of the umbrella to be turned. This type of umbrella is best suited for large outdoor spaces as it can block the sun from all directions.

 - console

Cantilever umbrellas are suspended from the sides of the frame. A bent arm supports only one end. This type of shade umbrella rotates 360 degrees, so it's perfect for large spaces with a dining table under the umbrella, or for a swimming pool next to garden furniture. Shades can be placed where needed.

 - Pavilion

A pavilion is a square hatch structure supported at each corner. Umbrellas are used in large open spaces where the whole family can shade. Most pavilions serve as temporary dining and entertainment spaces on beaches or parks.
